After three nights in Shanghai, we rode on a bus to a port on the Yangtze river. Here we boarded a "luxury" riverboat for a five day cruise up the Yangtze river. Highlights of the cruise included the Three Gorges Dam and a sidetrip up the Wu river. In addition the sights all along the river were spectacular.
We disembarked at Chongquin a city with 30 million inhabitants. Here we visited the zoo, famous for it's pandas, as well as several markets and the headquarters of General Stilwell who commanded US operations in China from Chongquin late in WWII.
From here we continued to Gulin famous for its sugar top mountains and to Xian, the home of the terracotta soldiers. Finally we flew to Bejing where we saw the Great Wall, the Summer Palace and a number of other sights. Except for the cruise, the food and accomodations were outstanding every place, and the cruise accomodations were OK.
